Roll out the barrel and raise a couple flags for January 2009's video game sales, which pulled off a 13 percent revenue increase over the same period a year prior.
"Even in these tough economic times...[the] increase in revenue...speaks to the continued strength of video games as one of the leading entertainment industries in the U.S.," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

Killer for the PS3 really. As much as I love the console itself over any other, sales like this will end up killing the Playstation 3 within 2 years if not sooner. If they don't cut the price within 3 months its game over.

#1, I know... sux, too
I mean the Xbox does some great things and is amazing as a media HUB, but the hardware is not only unreliable, it's juts not very attractive.
PS3 on the other hand is amazing - very well built, silent, reliable and simply more elegant.
BUT... as a media HUB and console for games, the execution and services are dreadful.
Start an HD movie download with Xbox and a minute later you're wathing it. Do the same thing with PS3 and two days later you may be able to view your film... It's a dang mess for Sony in this context. Move around to the other side of that and put in a Blu-ray disc and oh my... PS3 stuns! When you look at that aspect in a business context and recognize that Blu-ray player costs are falling through the floor, the PS3 as a BD player loses its advantage and as much potential as it has, you can easily see where it is in trouble. If MS can re-case the Xbox 360 - even in some minor way, they're going to be very tough for PS3 to catch.

All bad news for sony. The psTWO should be a bigger cashcow for them while they're stuggling through the HORRID decision to not make a bluray-less version of ps3. Getting down to only 100k units/month in 1/2009 must be significantly lower than their internal estimates/hopes.
lloyd, do you have a black or white x360? Even the white premium version, when placed behind smoked glass doors on my entertainment console fits in perfectly. And all the excessive noise is gone.

Got a black elite here - even with games installed to the hard drive it is still too noisy compared to the PS3. It is a real shame for the PS3 as lloyd says - its a fantastic piece of hardware. I had high hopes for home, it turned out to be dire, though it is improving. PSN works perfectly well for online gaming thankfully and the games are improving, their arcade store download titles are certainly outclassing the Xbox Live! Arcade titles - try Flower released yesterday, its great. Just a shame no one is buying the console to try them,

#3, Moorsea56, we have two white 360's and in terms of media, they have never been especially loud - that has not been the issue for us. Both sit in custom glass/metal frame media enclosures of different heights. We have a local guy that is a genius with such fabrication work. We do keep our home very cool by comparison.
Now... one of the two, a replacement for our original that RROD'd after two years, has an optical drive that when the boys game, sounds like it's about to come flying apart. It's just cheap hardware and inconsistent with how great the platform is in that larger context.
The PS3 is a dream of a network Blu-ray disc player and was purchased for that purpose mainly, and while it does have a few games Byron recommended to us for the older boys, it is hardly ever used for that purpose. Contrasting that, the Xbox is used daily for both games and media. I love it for that, but do wish MS would come out with a new case. I do not like how it looks - read: cheap. I have thought of re-casing it myself and adding a proper sink to it. Being a huge fan of gamers in general - they are the best and smartest PC users I have come across, I can't look at any of the consoles with much affection, or respect... I know... not rational... but there it is. I think we owe most of what we know about solid hardware to gamers is all.
