Free Windows Live Hotmail POP3 access has gone worldwide
Time: 09:09 EST/14:09 GMT | News Source: Neowin | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum

Sean Bradford: About a month ago we reported that Microsoft was rolling out free POP3 access to Windows Live Hotmail customers in select markets. For the vast majority, including myself, the updates had yet to hit their accounts. Well the wait is over, the Windows Live Hotmail team has officially announced that POP3 access for all Windows Live Hotmail accounts has now rolled out to every customer.

Here are the settings to access your e-mail messages via POP3:

POP server: (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: (Port 25 or 587)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes

Remember when MS bought Hotmail as was bound to cause it to be a horrible service?

Ah memories. I believe it happened during the year of linux.

What I remember about those days was how MS tried to migrate Hotmail off of its original Unix host platform to Windows, and the had to revert back to Unix as Windows couldn't handle the load at the time.

#2, Hotmail is hosted on Exchange 2007 based systems.

E2K7's web interface rocks. It is hands down the best web based email client available.
Hotmail comes close to its functionality.

I know latch. Personally I would have expected Microsoft to migrate one of the largest server farms onto a new platform seamlessly. Obviously MS's network operating system wasn't up to the task.

#3: We were talking about back in the day. And yes, thanks for the tip that Microsoft is awesome at everything, everywhere, throughout the Universe, in perpetuity.

Latch, have you ever tried E2K7 and related Outlook Anywhere services, mobile integration, presence token integration, MOC integration, SP integration - or even its web interface?

I think you really would find them to be excellent pieces of software for users and even better for NW/Sys admins.

#6: While I wasn't directly involved, some of our guys tried to install and new E2K7 server to replace our 2K3 server and they had problems galore. I'm not saying this had anything to do with Exchange per se, but just that they couldn't get it up. They had no problem with E2K3 a few years ago.

E2K7 set up is largely accomplished using commandlets. While it is far more powerful than E2K3, setting it up, especially in an environment where co-existence with E2K3 is to be maintained, requires a thorough understanding of a number of technologies - DNS, managing UCC Certs, domain redirects and much more, in addition to Exchange and its entire architecture.

It is not for the inexperienced to set up. If an organization has complex messaging needs, and or requires the universal messaging capabilities inherent to E2K7, then I would encourage people to seek out a solid Exchange hosting partner, or a partner that can help you set it up. We do both and compete with Microsoft and others in this context. I've written about our set up here, as you can see from my article at the time, it was not clear to me what Microsoft was trying to do. Now I know... they wanted to keep all but the most capable out of the channel. No ding on Latch's guys, but I'm not surprised they had a tough time. We've helped a great many people deploy it and so many are too inexperienced to have succeeded with pre E2K7 SP1 installs. I understand it is far easier now.
