Sorry, crapple. The truth hurts.
Even if they lowered their outrageous prices, I still wouldn't buy one. The diversity of applications just isn't there - never has been.

Mr. Hawk,
Your mind is obviously being manipulated by "the monopolisits".

"the one thing I can’t help but notice is how crazy the new commercials are making many in the Apple community"
She means crazier than usual ... right?

Go to Dell. Take a look at the quad core i7 Studio XPS with 6GB ram and a 4850. Sure its a sale ....
But 1149 vs 2649 for the Mac Pro. Yes, you could add a 2nd CPU to the Mac Pro. But if you don't want to?

The nerve is the rivalry between operating systems. Microsoft is acting as proxy on behalf of the hardware vendors in comparing prices for consumers.
Consumers don't really care about the operating systems when it comes down to it. They trust that the storefront's wont sell them a piece of crap that can't "do" something. And the included price for the OS also means nothing to them because it isn't broken down that way. They see: Dell = $1000. Not, Dell = $950 + $50 for Windows (and I'm sure it's not even that much).
So if you take the obvious fanboyism about operating system rivalry out of the picture and assume that every piece of hardware in existance either has NO OS or comes with a completely free copy of Linux, then it's extremely easy to compare value between the hardware. And the answer is simply the clear message that Microsoft is delivering to consumers:
Apple hardware is fancy and cool, but it costs more than PC hardware for the same stuff. (sometimes a LOT more)
There is very little exception to that point, and when you take our dark economic times, this message hits home very very well.

#5: Consumers do care what OS is installed. Reportedly, over 50% of the original Linux netbooks were returned because people could not run their Windows programs on them. MS is a monopoly thanks to tens of thousands of compatible programs compared to a vastly smaller number for other OS's. Many customers that I deal with, except the somewhat affluent ones that can easily afford an extra $400 for MS Office, more for Quicken, etc, shy away from Mac because they are strapped for cash and already have an investment in Windows based software. Windows wins based on affordability. The ad campaign is quite effective from that point of view.

^^ Agreed. I don't really think the customer goes into a store thinking about the operating system USUALLY. Unless the customer is somewhat savvy and knows what they want I would say it's safe to assume most consumers look at price and what version of Windows is coming on their machines before they buy them (unless they are looking for a Mac of course - then they don't have to ask that question).
A lot of the customers I deal with only look towards a Mac for 3 things: 1. "I'm tired of the viruses." or 2. "I want to use Final Cut Pro or Logic Studio" or 3. "My friend said a Mac is the best investment." Other than those 3 reasons most customers I deal with simply want a machine that is fast, fast, fast, isn't going to cost them an arm and a leg, will let them go to FaceBook and is capable of downloading torrents.
You know - the $500 miracle PC :)
