I love old technology as much as the next techno-geezer, but come on, it wasn't all wonder and goodness. After we're done reminiscing about the good old days of operating systems, let's reflect on the bad old days of operating systems as well. After all, the bad times are still with us -- even in 2009, there are still some wretched operating systems out there. |

No doubt, the object of this exercise for the author was to bash Vista. Any product that sells 200+ million copies is hardly a failure. Meanwhile, he "forgot" the worst of the worst OS in the history of computing for the desktop computer - *nix!
Yes, the all time favorite of the bashers on this web site, that any year now will be "its year" on the desktop. Meanwhile, what are we up to? This OS was "invented" about 15 years ago. Still its presence on the desktop is that of pimple on a elephant's butt. Plonk . . . This was written using a Dell XPS, Windows Vista Business 64-bit and IE8. They work great together. The XPS is pushing quad 20" monitors. The monitors were about $250 a piece and the XPS was about $700 with a dual core CPU, 2 X 256MB video cards and 4GB of RAM. I use it to trade with. It is one of the best setups I have had yet. |

Instead of OS's, I'll pick on OS features. On the top 10 stink list:
1. The Registry. This had to be someone's sick send of humor at work. 2. Shared DLL's. It's time for this Dinosaur from the floppy-disc past to die die die! 3. The Registry. Yes, it's so frickin' stupid it bears repeating twice. 4. The Registry. Ok, it bears repeating 3 times :) I don't give a rats patootie if having a program entirely encapsulated in it's program folder uses up a bit more space. At least if that ONE program blows up, ONLY that ONE program blows up. It is just plain stupid that a tiny program, such as a text editor, has the capability to take down an entire computer and ALL of it's apps due to a bug that damages the Registry. Same with DLL's. Put the friggin' programs code segments in the SAME folder with the rest of the program. I don't give a damn if it uses up more space. Again, if one program goes down, only ONE program goes down. #4 TL, registry (and some other critical parts of Windows) are virtualized in Vista.
See it action for yourself: open task manager, go to View->Select Columns and check "Virtualization". Note that many processes are virtualized, meaning operations are redirected to the virtual store (you can find it in Users\%username%\AppData\Local\VirtualStore). Where virtualization is disabled, app is refused write rights.. etc. Not bad. |

TL, you're a smart guy working in this industry and I know you 'know' why there is a registry and why it is better and actually one of the better things about Windows.
I also know you 'know' that a very large number of commercial *nix have followed MS's example and created their own, very similar databases to centrally house INF files - though I assess they do it much less well. I am certain you are aware of the many reasons, peformance, granular policy based security, and otherwise, that there is a registry and equally, how jacked up it really is to toss INF files all over creation on *nix that have not, as most commercial *nix have, adopted similar strategies!?!?! If I'm wrong and you don't know, would it help to review all that here? *the myth about the Windows Registry being 'bad' is one of those urban legends that wears on anyone with even a small measure of understanding about the OS. |
