Mary Jo Foley: There’s been a lot of new (and sometimes conflicting/confusing) information shared this week about Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform at the Microsoft Mix 10 conference.
Microsoft officials admitted that the phone team made a conscious decision to eliminate cut-and-paste functionality from the initial Windows Phone 7 platform. (They won’t say if or even whether Microsoft may add cut-and-paste to the phone platform, despite the fact that Windows Mobile currently has that capability.) This just in: Microsoft’s latest statement on the lack of cut-and-paste: “We’re always listening to feedback and will continue to improve our feature set over time based on what we hear.” (So I’ll take that as a maybe it’s coming sometime, but not in the initial version….)

The MS comment “We’re always listening to feedback and will continue to improve our feature set over time based on what we hear" implies that current customers told MS to remove the cut and paste feature from Windows Phone 7. Otherwise, the decision would have been arbitrary on Microsoft's part. Do people really not use cut and past in Mobile 6.x?

#1, I've used CCP on my HTC Ozone just a few times and it is always difficult to use. It does work, but is not easy with the small screen and D-pad.
On one hand (the this is a new platform that will have CCP and will evolve quickly over time), this is a non-issue.
On another (Microsoft CANNOT allow this issue to define the conversation around the new platform), it's a big deal and the company needs to do whaterver it takes to ensure CCP ships on day one - or risk losing momentum over something that is really stupid (the stupid part is allowing the omission of CCP to shape perceptions about the new platform).

#1: Microsoft always says that its decision are based on customer feedback....... now who these customers are is a different story.........
As far as I can see the only people happy with no removable storage are the ones who bought an iPhone not the ones who bought a 6.5 device.
Time will tell but personally I am going to wait to see what WP8 or WP7.1,7.2 etc will bring.
As it is right now I have no interest for the device, which is a pity, because I like the new UI..... once XBox and Facebook hubs are disabled.
I think and hope that MS will release a "Business' version of the OS including cut and paste, ability to use cab, removable storage, File Explorer etc.
I wonder how many companies will allow users to install Zune softwware on business computers.... And speaking of Zune software how are people supposed to sync Calendar, contacts, tasks etc.? I hope that MS does not expect everybody to sync OTA.
#2: When the iPhone came out you, I and many other people commented, very negatively, about the lack of cut and paste. I do the same about WP7 but I wonder why so many people here suddendly are so apologetic with MS and try to downplay the same issue? Seems double standard to me.... For me it was a big issue for Apple and it is a big issue for MS.
I cannot believe that one thousand developers cannot find a way to implement it without using techniques already patented by Apple?

#3, No one is giving Microsoft a pass over CCP.
What people are saying is that Windows Phone 7 is entirely new - a new way to interact with information on a MID. WP7 is not a copy of iPhone, as Android largely is. It is a radical departure from both and Windows Mobile.
This and the new developer tools is what people are excited about and they are not as focused on the desktop metaphor and individual apps.
You yourself have advocated for such a departure on the desktop - and by George they are going to do that, too.

#4: Iketchum I was not referring to you but to a lot of other bloggers, Paul Thurrot in primis.
Yes I did advocate a radical departure and, as I stated, I like the new UI, at least based on what I have seen so far; I have not used it yet so my opinion is based on limited facts.
What I do not like are the rest of the "news": no removable storage etc. etc.
