Today, we’re excited to give you a preview of the new Windows Live Hotmail, representing the next generation in personal email.
Email has changed a lot over the last five years. These days, you’re getting more email than ever – email that often requires you to leave your inbox to complete an action; you’re getting bigger and bigger attachments; and you’re using smart phones where you want to sync not only your email, but your contacts and calendar, too. In this post, we’ll talk about how we’ve built the new Hotmail, slated to launch this summer worldwide, to address the needs of the modern inbox.

#1: Thanks, I needed the laugh. MS decides to play freemail catchup years later and you think the world is going to change? Everyone I know left Hotmail a lonnnnnnnng ago. Let me guess: the new Hotmail will work best with Windows 7 and IE8, and work like ass with everything else as per the usual MS modus operandi? Or are they going to deliver it via Silverlight?

Sorry Latch, didn't quite catch what you said there. Could you rephrase this time with your head removed from your posterior?

#1 Which particular set of features does Gmail have to worry about here? And worry about so much that it's effectively out of the running especially with that whole door comment of yours.
#3 Initially I laughed at the comment regarding the delivery being in Silverlight... but then I realized it may not actually be a joke. Seriously... what better way to push Silverlight out there!

#3: I use both Hotmail and Gmail as I back up important e-mail from my domain to both sites and use each for other reasons. Some months back I mistakenly logged onto Hotmail using Google Chrome. Surprise. I was not given a warning to upgrade to IE for best results or any other ominous message. Hotmail loaded fast, looked exactly the same as it did in IE7 ot 8 and ran perfectly in Chrome with no features disabled. I don't think there is any conspiracy in MS's Hotmail improvements. This is genuine competition on a some what level playing field. In any case, Hotmail has not sucked for a some months now.

As soon as Hotmail gets good enough to match Gmail features wise I think people leave Google. Many people are uncomfortable with google. See Google Buzz fiasco, Google Street View Cards recording your wifi signals etc...
