One of the most pressing questions on investors’ and shareholders’ minds about Microsoft is how the company plans to respond to Apple’s iPad.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer didn’t share anything new regarding Microsoft’s plans on July 29 at the company’s annual Financial Analyst Meeting, but did assure Wall Street analyst and press attendees that the Softies aren’t burying their heads in the sand.

Users don't want a Desktop interface on a tablet. They can use windows 7 but there had better be a new GUI and better power mangement features.

actually it would be interesting if they just loaded Windows Phone 7 on a tablet and call it a day. To me that is a great starting point.
But I think that they are working on a less resource hog version of Win7 and UI optimized for the "slates". But from what I see the hardware manufactures are going to kill this market by over charding.. $299 should be top of the line.

#1 Even if they do all that (specialized Win 7).. will I still need some kind of antivirus? That would be such a turn off.
Looks like Ballmer thinks Windows will sell those tablets, but I am not sure people will see that as an advantage, especially if they can get Android tablet (for less?).
Hopefully we'll have both Android and MS powered tablets available this fall/winter..

I doubt you will see anything from MS before 2011.
Not a problem here: I am quite happy with my Toshiba convertible and W7, I never found the slate format a good solution for me; at least not as a replacemnt for a regular laptop.
