For better or worse, Microsoft(MSFT) is starting to hang ten on the office apps wave.Remember the good old days of say, 18 months ago? Google(GOOG) ruled the Web-based business app seas with its Google Apps line of office software tools. And Microsoft was king of the so-called on-premises office world -- that is, the Microsoft Office line of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and all the rest that runs from the PCs sitting on office desks. |

I have many MS Office 2003 files stored on Sky Drive. The stored Excel docs won't open when clicking on them to edit. The reason given is:
"The workbook cannot be opened because it contains the following features that are not supported by Excel in the browser: • Data validation" Since the Excel 2003 files all open locally, I cannot understand why MS can't have comparable functionality online, or at least explain what data it doesn't comprehend. Simple macros are confusing the online Excel? The code is in the file. I'll be darned if I change my Excel templates to suit MS's dumbed down online "version" of Excel. Word 2003 files open just fine. The MS online office suite is a non-starter as far as I am concerned. OpenOffice.org has no problem opening and saving correctly. Why did MS post a lame version of Excel online? Free or not it sucks, as does Google Docs which also cannot open the Excel files, which are all Invoices made of the same template file. On the positive side, Sky drive at least is a place to have an extra backup of important docs. This post was edited by bobsireno on Friday, December 03, 2010 at 00:50. |
