  Microsoft: BPOS Components Average 99.9-plus Percent Uptime

The hosted applications in Microsoft's Business Productivity Online Standard Suite (BPOS) have averaged uptime of 99.9 percent or better in the past year, according to the company. BPOS, a collaboration and communications suite hosted by Microsoft and sold with partners, includes Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Office Communications Online and Live Meeting.

When it comes to high availability, I didn't realize that three 9's were something to crow about.

If they are counting service downtime etc. Only having 8 hours of downtime in a single year is better than most companies likely to use the service would dream of.

Honestly though, 3-4-5 9's doesn't tell a proper story. I want to see uptime percentages during workhours by timezone. 10 minutes doesn't seem like much, until it's during the workday. If they have downtime for 20mins in the middle of the night doing service, it's much less important.

this seems to be hoax coz i experience more problems with Sharepoint than any other application .. but best of luck Microsoft

#4: If you want to know what I think about something, just ask. 8 hours of downtime per year is not impressive from either MS or Google. Both are huge tech giants that should be able to do better. Considering how they are both fighting for a slice of the cloud services pie, you think they might try harder even if it meant spending a fortune to one-up the other guy.

I worked at a major international company that pushed for the "five nines" - or 99.999%. Even there my ex-boss playted around with the numbers. Scheduled, unscheduled, etc.

Notice in the article that google did not include any outages less than 10 minutes.

If anything, this shows that the whole "Linux is reliable" + "Windows is unreliable" argument that Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols and others trumpet ad nauseam is nonsense. Linux obviously isn't some magic component that makes Google's services reliable (they're not), and Windows isn't some curse that makes Microsoft's services comparatively unreliable (they're not). They both have had outages.

#7: I'm not sure how you're making this a Windows vs Linux issue. Downtime is caused by a plethora of circumstances can that go way beyond the scope of the OS. I would tend to believe that OS stability is the least of their concerns.

#9, please tell Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols and others. For them, every outage for a Windows-based system is due to Windows, and every outage for a Linux-based system is due to everything but Linux.

I think the other issue here is comparing uptimes between dissimilar systems. A PBX should boast 5 9's. A server room switch (and I wish a consumer-grade switch!) should hit 5 9's. A tightly-controlled, mature, predictably-accessed back-end database for a banking system should crank out 5 9's. Yeah, it'd be great if BPOS/O365/Google Docs also hit 5 9's already, but this is relatively uncharted territory, particularly at this scale. Give them a few years to mature.

Don't get me wrong--I'm not crazy about these services so far, and uptime is one of the reasons. The amount of service downtime doesn't really bother me, it's just that you don't have any control over it. When you host your own, you can schedule necessary maintenance around the requirements of the business. The downtime figures are also not an aggregate of total customer-side downtime, just the backend system. If you lose your internet link (either locally or somewhere upstream), have a routing issue, have a firewall issue, or some other reason that prevents access to the service (DDOS?), those will drop the "actual" downtimes as perceived by end users. And at the end of the day, that's the only one that counts....:)

#10: The one way I could see WvL being part of the downtime equation is Windows notorious habit of requiring a reboot for seemingly minor changes as compared to Linux. However, when you're talking about a cloud being supported by a server farm, you typically roll out the updates in a controlled fashion so that it doesn't disrupt service.
