Windows 8 distribution takes a page from Linux | |

You, yes you, can now download a copy of Windows 8. This marks the first time that Microsoft has released a pre-beta version of one of their flagship programs to the general public. I wonder where they got that idea. Could it be from Linux? After all Linux distributions has been making early versions available to the public since Linux started 20-years ago. |

As a wanna be computer geek I installed Windows 8 Developers build on my old Dell Laptop. I installed it from a usb flash drive took about a half hour.
Had fun setting it up, felt like a new computer. So far so good, a lot of the guts of the OS are buried but still there. |

I installed it under Hyper-V. Runs fine.
However, (and yes I know it's a developer preview so the Captain Obvious's of the crowd can stay away), if Microsoft ships it with that 'Designed By Playschool" interface they are going to be the laughing stock of the computer industry. First thing I did was the Registry change to turn that crap off. The new Task Manager is cool as hell though :) |

| I remember everyone saying XP's interface was designed by Fisher Price when it came out. Once they got used to it most people didn't seem to mind. |

TL: If you want to show others what the Windows Phone interface looks like on a conventional PC there's an app for that. It changes the registry settings for you so that you can toggle between Metro and Explorer. http://solo-dev.deviantart.com/art/Windows-8-Start-Menu-Toggle-258422929
