Microsoft could rake in more than $1 billion in revenue in the first year after launching Office for Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms, an analyst said today. Gerry Purdy, principal of MobileTrax, did a back-of-the-envelope calculation with several assumptions to arrive at the $1.25 billion, then added that with tablet shipments doubling this year, Microsoft could squeeze as much as $6 billion annually from mobile down the road. "These are rough estimates," Purdy acknowledged in an interview today. "But this is an issue because the numbers are getting so big with the iPad and Android tablets that Microsoft can't continue to ignore it." |

| I would have to agree with this, at least for the iOS side. Apple's Office suite, called iWorks, literally sucks compared to Microsoft Office. I really, really hope we see MS Office on iOS. I don't really have an opinion about the Android side, as I have tried it and it failed for me, but I guess when you take into account the number of Android devices out there, Microsoft would probably see a huge sale-base from all the users. Either way I think it would be a great win for Microsoft. |

| Maybe after Microsoft figures out how to code Office for Metro, so it doesn't switch to a desktop version, they'll do so for iOS and Android. My guess is that Home and Student would be the standard version, with a 365 subscription being the main push by MS. Outlook, Access, etc would be sold separately at about $100 per user, if and when Microsoft bothers to do so. After all, they seem like a confused and disjointed firm at this point in time. Maybe that's just the Windows 8 in me talking. |
