With Halloween approaching, we thought we'd remind
you to push back your clocks one hour tonight. If you're lazy,
Microsoft has implemented a feature in their clock program just for
you! Here's how to get Windows to automatically update its time for
Daylight savings time, and it will remind you to change your other
            clocks!

              - Double click your time at the lower right hand
corner of your screen. If you have that disabled, go to Start
                > Settings > Control Panel > Date/Time

              - Go into the Time Zone Tab, and check
"Automatically adjust clock for daylight savings time
                changes"

Thats it! We at ActiveWindows wish you a happy and safe
Halloween! We hope you like our slight changes to our posts and
            layout!

Sorry, we havn't posted this, but we thought it
was pretty much self explanatory when Asheron's Call's beta ended.
Asheron's Call did go gold on October 26, 1999. Gold means that it
is ready for release. Asheron's Call is expected to be in stores
on November 2-4, 1999 depending where you go. You can purchase it
online and get it the day its in stores. We've compiled a list to
where you can pre-order Asheron's Call and get a free month in
addition to the other free month, for a toal of 2 free months!
              GameStop
              (Babbages & Software Etc) - $ 44.99 - November 2nd
              EBWorld
              - $ 44.99 - November 2nd
GameStop uses an overnight delivery and I don't
believe EBWorld does, so we recommend GameStop, however with not
that many stores online preordering, it will be hard to get it
when it first comes out. As thousands of people are preordering it
and I doubt they'll have enough copies.
We will be receiving our Asheron's Call Gold
copy next week, and will post an update to our review. If you
emailed comments about the review, I will be taking those into
              consideration when I update it.

              Omikron: The Nomad Soul

            GameSpy.com has a preview
up of Half-Life Opposing Force, complete with a look at the mission
pack, the multiplayer contributors, and of course, a slew of new
screenshots from the pack.  Here are a few words from the
            interview:

                The press demo we've played
through doesn't contain any of the multiplay levels, so we'll
have to cross our fingers and hope they're as good as we've
heard. It does, however, include a sampling of some of the great
single-player levels you'll find in the episode, some of the
best level designs we've seen to date. You'll fight off the
nasties with fellow marines at your side -- the experience is
undeniably Half-Life but unique in its own right. Subtle details
link the two games together as the plot unfolds.

Saw on Blues that there are plans for a Nocturne
Engine based Blair Witch Project Game. No details of the game have
been announced, but with an engine like Nocturne's behind the game,
I am sure it should be interesting.  Personally I thought the
movie was awful, but you can't lie about all the crowd response this
            summer.

Bowie Talks is the title of an interview on GameSpot with the
illustrious performer about his involvement with Omikron: The Nomad
Soul, the upcoming 3D action/adventure game by Quantic Dreams and
Eidos Interactive. Here's a bit about Bowie's actual presence in the
            game:

GameSpot News: A character in the game is modeled after
you in more than the physical sense. Were you critical of this
character? Is it revealing in any way, or was being motion
captured the digital equivalent of watching a tape of one of your
              performances?

David Bowie: Which character do you mean? - the
omnipotent digital super-being, or the scruffy hallucinating
singer? The motion-captured dance sequences were actually designed
and performed by Edouard Lock, a longtime friend and collaborator.
So what we have here are dance steps designed for me and performed
by my digital counterpart - stranger still.

Eidos Interactive has announced the availability of Cinematix
Studios' Revenant for PC CD-ROM. This innovative role-playing game
combines a fully functional combat system with adventure elements
            and a deep storyline.
Revenant is a dark fantasy role-playing game that immerses gamers
in a visually stunning and challenging environment. With
breathtaking 65,000 color graphics, fully animated 3D characters,
true light sourcing and coloring in Direct 3D, Revenant is by far
the most vibrant and detailed role-playing game to date.
Revenant also offers unparalleled features beyond what typically
defines the genre. The game features a built-in level editor
allowing gamers to create their own scenarios, using the same tiles
and graphics used to put together the final game. Players can place
treasures, monsters, traps, lighting effects and more on the map.
The whole scripting language that the game was built with is
available to create branching conversations, and
            ``mini-cut-scenes.''
The multiplayer capabilities include six custom designed
deathmatch levels for play on EidosGames.com.

The Oxygen Tank has a quick interview
with Minh Le, project leader of the Counter-Strike mod for
Half-Life. It doesn't really provide a whole lot of new info, as
Minh Lee really didn't seem to be all that interested in talking
about Counter-Strike... which made for a kind of funny/ kind of rude
            interview.

Is there a plan on how many
beta releases there will be before the final version?
I never understood why this was so important to know? What
difference does it make. It's like knowing when the last day of
your life will be. If you knew that, would you behave any
different? To answer your question, "No, there is no plan on
how many beta releases I'll make.."
Will you be adding any more weapons/items or are you satisfied
with the ones currently included in the mod?
I tend to come up with new ideas on my own. If I feel something
will be neat to have in CS, I'll add it.

If you play Half-life online and
haven't tried this mod out, then I highly recommend it. Counter-strike
            and Action Half-life have
been about all I've played in the last few months.  They really
add a new dimension to the game. Sorry for the lack of updates
yesterday. I got busy in the office and just couldn't make it.

              making Quake III?

Carmack: This is the first game ever where at the end of
the project I haven't actually been the lynchpin of getting it
done. The holdup right now is getting our single-player experience
and the computer-controlled bots working. I wish I had laid more
groundwork for [that]. I was delegating. You hear over and over --
the leader shouldn't be micromanaging all these things. Delegation
didn't work out so great this time....

Get ready to add another massively multiplayer game to the mix,
but this one will have Vulcans and Romulans, rather than elves and
dragons. Activision, in a conference call with analysts, today
announced plans to release Star Trek: Q Continuum, an online
game that will take advantage of the company's Star Trek license.
The game is due in the company's next fiscal year, meaning it won't
hit store shelves for at least six months. (Activision today
released its earnings report for the second fiscal quarter of 2000.)
Activision estimates there are at least 500,000 gaming
enthusiasts who are also Star Trek fans. It hopes to capture a
substantial percentage of those using a subscription-themed model,
like the one found in EverQuest and Ultima Online.

There is a new version of the Unreal Tournament Demo. Its build
3.48.  The full demo weighs in at a whopping 53 mb but you can
patch the old demo with a 8.9 mb download. Here is the rundown from
            Jack Porter :

This version will be the last demo version avaiable before
UT appears on store shelves.   This version is NOT
network compatible with previous versions, so we encourage
everyone to upgrade.  It doesn't contain any new content -
only performance improvements and bug fixes.   ngWorldStats
will also be reset for this demo release.

in the isle of Dereth when placing a pre-order.
Additionally, Electronic Boutique is offering a $10 mail-in

Electronic Boutique exclusive is an excellent value for in-store

Electronic Arts announced that it has shipped Jane's USAF,
featuring eight of the hottest jets of the United States Air
Force. Players can fly historical missions over Vietnam and the
Middle East, or futuristic missions over Germany, and defend home
soil over Nellis Air Force Base and the Las Vegas Strip.
Published by Electronic Arts' Jane's Combat Simulations brand
and developed by Pixel Multimedia Inc. in Tel Aviv, Israel, Jane's
USAF allows players to fly the F-15C, F-15E or A-10 Warthog
"in the mud" and destroy enemy ground targets. Relive
great historic air battles over Vietnam in the F-4E or the F-105.
Fly the powerful F-16C Falcon and take out enemy MIGS. Finally,
push the envelope while flying the menacing F-117 Stealth Fighter
and ultra-modern F-22 over Las Vegas.
A next-generation 3-D terrain engine allows for high resolution
and high frame rate terrain rendering on all kinds of PCs.
Detailed "real-world" terrain is created with real
satellite data with true elevation and coloring. Spectacular
special effects like night flight, stunning lighting, multiple
explosion types and full 3-D virtual cockpits crank up the combat
              intensity.
              Jane's
Combat.net  allows players to fly with as many as seven
human foes or allies for free online. Jane's Combat.net features a
"Kill-and-Compare" area where Combat.net posts players'
combat statistics every time they go online, allowing players to
challenge other pilots based on their expertise with specific
weapons or tactics. Every kill, every loss, every medal won, every
injury incurred, every hour in every aircraft in every battle is
all logged automatically. This feature allows players to trace
their career development, learn from mistakes and earn their place
at the top of the pyramid.

               Allegiance,
the upcoming multiplayer space-combat game from the minds of Microsoft
Research, combines the challenges of tactical squadron-based
combat, intense one-on-one space dogfights, and amazing graphical
and sound effects into a space-action experience like nothing
              you've seen before.
All taking place on the MSN
Gaming Zone, you can elect to get into the action immediately
in death-match style arenas, or pledge Allegiance to one of the
              diverse Civilization Alliances
and join a squadron. And when you play on the Allegiance Zone,
you'll be able to engage hundreds of players in death-match style
arenas, compete in tournaments, and access exclusive additional
              civilizations!
Allegiance is scheduled for a Spring 2000 release.

              IPlayGames has posted a review
              of Interplay's Starfleet Command.

I was eager and started up a new campaign and
I got my ass kicked so hard on the first mission I didn’t know
my head from my tail (so to speak). Quickly backing off I
decided to go through the training sequences instead. They go
through such elementary subjects as setting the ships speed and
heading to dropping off mines and sending out probes. Extremely
helpful if you, like me, are a beginner in the realm of
                strategy.

Along with his latest worklog, John Carmack announces that
there will not be another release of Q3Test with bots, as had been
planned. The next release with bots will be the full demo, to be
released sometime after testing of the full game begins (for which
there is no specific timeframe). Here's the deal:
The next release will be the
full "demo" release for quake 3. It will include bots
and a new, simple level that is suitable for complete beginners to
play, as well as the existing q3test maps.
The timing just didn't work out
right for another test before we complete the game.
We plan on releasing the demo
after code freeze, when the entire game is in final testing, which
will give us a few days time to fix any last minute problems that
              show up before golden master.
No, I don't have an actual date
              when that will be.

Microsoft today announced that Fighter Ace II, the MSN Gaming
              Zone's (http://www.zone.com)
massively multiplayer World War II air combat game, is now in
public beta. On schedule to be released in December 1999, Fighter
Ace II allows more than 300 pilots to fight in a single air combat
arena from the cockpit of any one of more than 25 World War II
              vintage fighters and bombers.
To participate in the Fighter Ace II public beta, would-be
flyers must be registered Fighter Ace players, currently playable
on the MSN Gaming Zone. Registration is easy and can be done at: http://zone.msn.com/fighterace/.
A free, 3-day trial of the game is available.
In Fighter Ace II, players battle for airborne supremacy by
coordinating battle plans with their wingmen and squad mates.
Fighter aces must defend their territory, secure new strategic
positions, and blast bogies in an on-going war between British,
German, United States, Russian, and Japanese aircraft. Fighter Ace
II's accurately modeled World War II aircraft include such planes
as the DeHavilland Mosquito, the F4U-4 Corsair and the legendary
Zero. Players can completely customize the ordnance load-out of
their planes including auxiliary fuel, bombs and rockets.
On the Zone, players can easily find games that accommodate
their style and intensity of play. Fighter Ace II provides diverse
types of gaming arenas, including team based games of conquest and
combat, free for all games, and even arenas divided by pilot
ability to make the entry into this exciting world easy and fun.
With the new squadron support in Fighter Ace II, players can
easily coordinate and communicate with their wingmen and allies to
              dominate the skies.

            CGO has posted their first
installment on a new feature titled The
Essentials List -10 Essential First-Person Shooters. naturally
they start with DOOM, throw in a bit of System Shock, Quake.. and
            lots more.
Creating these kinds of lists is a
lot of fun; however, regardless of the criteria used, people are
always going to disagree with some of the selections. But they
provide a starting point for a lot of interesting debate and
discussion. This month we'll take a look at the First-person
Shooter, which is arguably the most hotly contested category in
            gaming.

One of the most anticipated games of 1999 won't
be out until 2000.  "The game just wasn't done,"
              says Interplay spokesperson Lisa Bucek.
Giants tells the story of three warring species,
vying for control of a single planet. You'll be able to play as
any of the races: the Sea Reapers, the Meccaryn and the giant,
Kabuto. Kabuto can crush victims with his bare hands, Meccaryns
have space travel and weapons to their advantage and the Sea
Reapers can travel the seas and control devastating elemental
powers. You'll be able to manipulate the landscape to create
obstacles and destroy the enemy. The game will boast 30 levels.
Delays are, of course, nothing new in the
computer gaming industry and Giants is hardly the first to
be bumped back to 2000. Earlier this year, Microsoft and Digital
Anvil quietly announced that Starlancer would be delayed
              until sometime next year.

I have only just noticed that Bullfrog have
posted the reason why patch 1.6 for Dungeon Keeper 2 has been
              delayed:
               Apologies for the lack of
downloads of late. The Bullfrog Test Team have been extremely busy
trying to get Theme Park World to Final and our DK2 Updates have
been stuck in the queue behind it.
Rest assured, more updates are coming and we haven't forgotten the
non-English versions. Thanks for your patience.

Id Software designer Graeme Devine has been
talking about the impact the Quake III Arena tests have had on
              gamers.
Speaking in an interview due to be published in
Games Business, he described the difficulty of weighing the
concerns of experienced gamers, against those who are new to first
              person shooters.
He said, "Most of the criticisms are to do
with either gun or weapon balance but we haven’t really made too
many changes because the maps we have out there aren't really a
good indication of the full retail product. One is very open and
spacey and meant to just test modem play. The other shifts lots of
              polygons."
He added, "We have listened to their
concerns on network play, for example. We've addressed their
issues and we're trying to balance a hell of a lot more; trying to
give players the gameplay that they want. We try and listen to the
new consumers and the old faithful consumers as well."

The Interactive Digital Software Association is
looking to extend its control. The trade organization of the
computer gaming industry has created an independent council "to
ensure that advertisements placed by U.S. computer and video game
software makers are appropriate, responsible, truthful and
accurate." The division will be a part of the Entertainment
Software Ratings Board (ESRB), which rates games for age
appropriateness and content. All of the leading game enthusiast
magazine publishers have agreed to adopt and implement the new
            advertising Principles and Guidelines.
Game ads have been an increasing source of
controversy in the months following the Columbine school shootings.
Gory and sexually provocative magazine advertising often surpasses
the actual violent content in the game. Critics have argued that the
            ads glorified the violent elements.

Microsoft announced today that Flight Simulator
2000, the most comprehensive update in the 17-year history of the
product, is starting to appear on store shelves in the U.S. There
have been many reports of its availability, and full domestic

will be available in Europe in mid-November.
For the first time, Microsoft is offering two
versions of Flight Simulator 2000, the best selling PC flight

enthusiasts and pilots, and Flight Simulator 2000 is the logical
choice for new or more casual users.
              Flight Simulator 2000 continues Microsoft's
tradition of working directly with aircraft manufacturers, pilot
organizations, flight training organizations, respected flight
instructors, aeronautical engineers, and other leaders in aviation
to add authenticity and experience to the product. Key partners
include Cessna, Jeppesen Sanderson, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots
Association (AOPA), Flight Safety International, Bell Helicopter
Textron Inc., Mooney Aircraft Corp., Systems Management Inc.; and
pilots John and Martha King, Rod Machado and Patty Wagstaff.
Flight Simulator 2000 is optimized for the Intel
Pentium III processor to deliver a great visual experience and
better-than-ever simulation performance. For more information on

& Conquer Tiberian Sun has sold over 2 million copies
worldwide since the game's release on August 27th. With a debut of
number one on PC Data's software sales chart, C&C Tiberian Sun
has set new records there as well. The original Command &

recognized in the 1999 Guinness Book of World Records as the
"Most Successul Strategy War Game." The follow up to the
same game, Command & Conquer Red Alert has also jumped off the
sales scale, with over 3 million units having been sold. If you
add in the expansion packs as well as Playstation, Sega and N64
versions of the games, the license has far surpassed the 10
million total sales mark. Westwood Studios will also be releasing
full details on the upcoming Tiberian Sun Expansion Pack,

Saw on Well-Rounded news that they're finally going to release
a game based on the Evil Dead movie series.  The films, long
a favorite of the gaming crowd will be released on the PC and
Playstation platforms.  THQ has snagged a five-year licensing
deal for the rights to the film franchise on all platforms. The
first entry will be Evil Dead: Ashes 2 Ashes, due out next
              fall.
"An interactive adventure based on Evil Dead is
long overdue," said Bruce Campbell, star of the three Evil
Dead films.  You'll assume the role of Ash -- the
              square-jawed, shotgun-toting, chainsaw-armed hero -- in a new
story that continues the ongoing saga of the Necronomicon ex
Mortis (also known as the Book of the Dead). The story's set eight
years after the last installment of the film's trilogy (Army of
Darkness). Ash returns to the infamous cabin in the woods.
There, he is again faced with the challenge of battling
"deadites" and evil forces that have crossed over to our
              world because of the Necronomicon.

Yep, another .plan update by The Man (no, not

                  * fixed steady snapshot test
                  * fixed incorrect 0 ping if past client messages

actually get dropped, but are delayed as needed
                  * replace headnode overflow with lastCluster
                  * fixed bad extrapolation on unpausing

                 Just scanning through Nihilistic's
Vampire board and noticed a post by Robert Huebner, Lead
Programmer of Vampire, regarding how well a Voodoo2 will run
their upcoming game, The Vampire: The Masquerade. Check it:

If your only 3D accelerator is a Voodoo2,
then you will only be able to run the editor in software mode,
which won't be efficient for editing large levels on an
average machine. The reason is Voodoo2 cards typically can
only run in full-screen mode, but the editor uses OpenGL to
render several desktop windows in 3D simultaneously. The
editor also works best if run at higher resolutions like
1024x768 or higher which the Voodoo2 cannot support without
SLI. So even if/when 3DFX improves their GL driver so it can
run QERadiant better, the Voodoo2 will still not be a good
                  choice.

Voodoo2 will run the game fine, however. We consider that our
"typical" benchmark card at the moment.

There have been quite a few posts to this
thread on various video cards, and how they should/will run
Vampire, and in particular, the editor for Vampire.

Just wanted to let your readers know that we
have found a minor but important bug in the ranking algorithm
for ngWorldStats for Unreal Tournament (http://ut.ngWorldStats.com/)
and that it will be fixed before Saturday when the weekly
                  totals reset.

Also, at that time we will be publishing the details of the
ranking system, launching a web forum, and taking community
feedback on likes and dislikes of the ranking algorithm. We
are very open to players thoughts on the subject and look
forward to their feedback in order to make the system the best
it can be when the retail version ships.

Contrary to their post yesterday, FGN is now
                reporting that Terminal Reality/GOD's third-person
horror/adventure game, Nocturne, has not gone gold, at least not
                yet. Here's the actual blurb:

Jeff Smith from developer Terminal Reality
contacted FGN Online to say "I work in house here so I
can tell you for sure we have not gone gold."

The news need be of no worry to fans. Smith assures us that
the title is due to go gold October 15. This means the
horro-adventure title will still comfortably make its
                  Halloween release date.

                  description, from this 32.7Mb demo:

EA Sports' NBA Live 2000 is the sixth iteration in the
NBA Live series of basketball games. Sixty of the greatest
NBA legends of all time--including Michael Jordan--are
included in the PC and PlayStation games. Game players can
compete against five All-Star teams from the 1950s through
the 1990s, or see how they stack up against today's teams.
They can also challenge one of the current NBA players or
one of the legends in a game of one-on-one street ball on an
outdoor court. The game is scheduled to ship in October for
the PC, and in November for the PlayStation and Nintendo 64.

If you can't wait to play, though, you can relive the
hard-fought NBA Finals in the demo, as the underdog New York
Knicks battle the San Antonio Spurs. Play either Simulation
or Arcade mode and challenge yourself in various skill
levels, from Rookie to Superstar. You can also take the game
to the street for some one-on-one. "Face in the
Game" technology, Internet capability, and Franchise
mode are not included in the demo. System requirements for
                    the 33MB demo are a Pentium-166, Windows 95/98, 32MB of RAM,
a 4MB PCI or AGP video card with DirectDraw, and DirectX
                    drivers.

team that brought the gaming world the post-apocalyptic RPG

core team with their newly formed company, Troika Games, based

nemesis, and a sexy female heroine (Julie), who was inspired
by B-movie queen and Penthouse Pet, Julie Strain. FAKK 2's
story picks up where the movie left off. Players control
FAKK 2, who must now defend her home world from invasion
from a borg-like collective known as the Gith Industries.
The company has been monitoring the galaxy for a suitable
planet to assimilate and they have just stumbled across
                    Julie's world.

                     I
                    have posted my review
of Sierra/Relic's new space title, Homeworld. Here is a
                    snippet from the review:
The game is set in full 3D (More on that
later) so the controls are mostly mouse based. Zooming in
and out is done by holding down the two main mouse buttons
and dragging backwards and forwards. Ship menus are brought
up onto the screen by simply right clicking on them,
selecting groups of ships is done the same way as many RTS
games, by just dragging a box over them. When you select a
ship in the distance, if you would like to center on that
particular craft all you have to do is to press the center
button on your mouse (If you have one), pressing it twice
will zoom onto that one craft/group of crafts you have
                    selected.

Although an add-on for Descent3 is currently in the
works, we didn't know the name until now. According to the
                    guys over at Descent3d
the name for the official Descent3 add-on is Mercenary. To
celebrate, Descent3d is holding a contest, the big winner
will have their level featured on the add-on pack CD.
Currently the release date for this pack is unknown.

I just noticed over at TP that according to a post they
spotted over on Sierra's SWAT3 forum, the demo of SWAT3:CQB
has been delayed about a week (so we should see a demo
possibly around the end of this month). They also noticed
mention that there should be a new official SWAT3 site soon.

Looking Glass Studios/Eidos' Thief Gold has just gone
gold (no, that's not a redundant sentence). Look for Thief
Gold in stores on or around October 19th. Don't know what
Thief Gold is? Here's the list of changes from Thief:

All of the levels in the original game
have had a beautification pass run through -- torches,
textures, room brushes, better EAX support, fixes for
                      mildly annoying problems etc.

In the original Thief spec, each talisman was supposed to
be in its own mission. In Thief Gold, we have restored the
two talisman missions that were cut from the original
Thief game, and have given each talisman its own mission
as originally intended (Mages' Tower & Song of the
                      Caverns).

Also, we had intended to create some direct competition
                      for the talisman for Garrett in the form of the Mages;
there are 4 kinds of Mages, just as there are 4 types of
talismans. The Mages only have the Earth Talisman now and
so the air, water, and fire mages want to get their
talisman back from where the keepers hid them. So they are
also searching for them, in direct competition with
Garrett. We have added mages to Lost City, who are
searching for the Fire Talisman there.

Mission numbers refer to the original Thief numbers:

Mission 4 - Catacombs: Cavern system simplified, textures
in the catacombs themselves given more variety, insertion
of a new monster type. Player can now get more fire arrows
if they run out before they discover that they are
necessary to light all of the torches in a puzzle room.

Mission 6 - The Sword - new terrain added, modified
                      objectives on expert difficulty level.

Mission 7 - The Ruined Cathedral: A new monster type
inserted to prevent the player from ever running out of
fire arrows; keeper map updated to reflect the new mission
                      structure.

Mission 9 - Lost City: Any and all references to the Water
Talisman removed (placed back in original spot in new
mission that was cut from the original game). Added a
tunnel to get back from the bridge for people who make the
Crazed Jump. Redistribute loot, books, resources. Removed
craymen and replaced with Mages. Many books changed to
                      reflect the change.

Mission 10 - Undercover: Any and all references to Earth
Talisman is removed (placed back in new mission that was
                      cut from the original game).

                     I noticed that Creative
Labs has released a new beta version (v1.02b) of their
Game Launcher. This new version "fixes issues with
launching certain DOS games". Here's another plug for
                    just what Game Launcher is:

The Creative Labs family of graphics
cards ship with an extensive set of Display Property
controls (Gamma, OverClocking, Advanced Properties, etc.)
to allow the user to configure the graphics card to best
fit their requirements. With the number of advanced 3D
graphics games on the market today, it is desirable to
have a unique set of display properties associated with
each game so that each one runs and looks as good as can
                      be.
This is what the Game Launcher Utility allows you to
do. You can load your games into the Game Launcher and
create a unique set of display properties for each one.
When the Game is "Launched" through the utility,
it will apply these properties to your graphics card
before running the game. Upon completion of the game, the
                      original properties will be restored.
